Although the Master Plan was developed by DPZ, Alfaro was responsible for designing the project\u2019s tree planting and landscaping, where he promotes the following criteria. <\/p><p><b> <\/b><\/p><ol><li><b> Shade continues as climate infrastructure.<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p>Alfaro\u2019s design focused on creating a comfortable pedestrian route thanks to:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Plant native, diverse, evergreen species to provide year-round shade.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Plan the trees 7 meters apart to allow their canopies to intertwine.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Combat heat islands and lower sidewalk temperatures to promote walkability.<\/li><\/ul><p>This approach makes Porta Norte an example of urbanism adapted to the tropical Panamanian climate.<\/p><p><b> <\/b><\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><b> Integration of landscaping with engineering<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p>To ensure robust trees in the long term, Alfaro worked closely with the project engineers:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">No system (aqueduct, sanitary, storm sewer, gas, telecommunications, or irrigation) runs beneath the trees.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">The power cables were buried underground to allow for large canopies without interference.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">He designed the street section of Panama Boulevard, integrating mobility, landscaping, and functionality.<\/li><\/ul><p>This comprehensive planning prevents future problems and ensures the health of urban trees.<\/p><p><b> <\/b><\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><b> Biodiversity as urban identity<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p>In the first phase, more than 700 trees and 65 different species were planted. Each street has a distinctive species: <\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bulevar Panam\u00e1:<\/b> Llama Dorada<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avenida La Uni\u00f3n:<\/b> Sombreiro<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bulevar Porta Norte:<\/b> Lorito<\/li><\/ul><p>Additionally, the project includes:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">El Paseo de los Gigantes (the tallest trees in Panama).<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">El Paseo de las Frutas (the country\u2019s fruit trees).<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Experimentation with native species to identify those that adapt best.<\/li><\/ul><p><b> <\/b><\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><b> Symbolic meaning<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p>The first tree planted in Porta Norte was a Belisario Porras, inspired by the iconic specimen in Plaza Herrera in Casco Viejo, whose technical data sheet was prepared by Alfaro.
